Common Warts

Most people at some time or another will suffer with a small circular tumor on the surface of their skin commonly known as a wart and whilst it will probably be on either their hands or feet, they can be found on any part of the skins surface. Contact with the skin of someone who has warts may be enough to catch them if you are more susceptible to warts but they can still be passed on through the contact of a towel of someone who is suffering with warts.

Even though genital warts are like most other warts, do not cause any pain (except warts on the areas of the foot where you apply pressure when walking) but are nonetheless highly contagious and can be contracted during any type of sexual act. A person will not generally become vulnerable to warts until after the age of three and after this they can grow almost anywhere and in women even inside the vagina which often aren’t detected until they have an examination.

Broken areas of skin are more susceptible to warts as the virus has easy access and they can spread when picked at by children although they do not generally cause any problems other than how they appear to others so it isn’t always necessary to get rid of them. Treatment of warts is generally carried out owing to the adverse cosmetic affect they have but it isn’t a bad idea if they become a persistent problem. A common method of removing them is by the application of liquid nitrogen and after a few treatments they usually drop of but this has to be performed by a doctor.

Common Warts...

Whilst warts all tend to be referred to as common warts, this is not the case as there are a large number of variations. There are more than 100 types of human papillomavirus viruses; some types of human papillomavirus tend to cause warts on the skin, while other types focus on the genitals and rectal area.

The most frequently seen wart is that on the ends of fingers, often the result of a person biting their nails which can leave the skin tender but not everyone has the same problems with warts but why some people are more prone to getting them than others remains a mystery. This is the area the common wart is most frequently found, around the cuticles at the finger tips and recognized by the cauliflower like appearance of the tumor which sometimes grow in groups; the small black dots that are in the center are actually blood vessels.

Flat warts are small, slightly elevated, flat-topped, pink or tan papules and are smoother than the common wart but they occur primarily on the face, arms, and legs, and a person can have several, even hundreds of them. Warts found in the ano-genital area can also be flesh colored, also gray but these might be shiny and have the cauliflower appearance as well; they like damp areas and this is why they can be found inside the vagina and even the urethra.

Although it is quite common for warts to just disappear months or years after they were discovered, some are more persistent and have to be treated with either treatments available at drugstores or by a doctor. The most common type of treatment involves salicylic acid which is readily available at drugstores and supermarkets but remember that removing a wart with salicylic acid requires a strict regimen of cleaning the area, applying the acid, and removing the dead skin with a pumice stone or emery board.
