The problem with warts (a tiny rough unsightly tumor) is they can grow almost anywhere on the body including inside the mouth and genitals but are most usually seen on the hands and feet. The common wart which is more than likely those found on someone’s fingers or hands are still contagious if they are touched but it is not uncommon for someone to contract warts from using the towel of someone who has the condition.

The most contagious of all warts are genital warts which are caught from another person who has them during sex, even orally, who may not even know they have them but all warts except for those on the soles of the feet do not cause pain. Unfortunately for women, they may have genital warts on their cervix for some time until their doctor gives them a routine examination; the warts inside the vagina may go unnoticed even for years.

A tiny cut or scratch can make any area of skin more vulnerable to warts and, if a child picks at a wart, it can spread to other parts of the body but warts don’t generally cause any problems, so it’s not always necessary to have them removed, unless you have concerns. A common reason for eradicating warts is to stop further spread but even when this is achieved, they can return at any time and for some people they can become a persistent nuisance. Often discovered in the urethra, vagina and anus, ano-genital warts are highly contagious; they have a preference for the damp areas and can also appear skin colored but not always plus they are not always the same shape.

Often warts disappear on their own, although it may take many months, or even years, for the warts to go away but some warts won’t go away on their own and this is where over-the-counter options are useful. The most common type of treatment involves salicylic acid which is readily available at drugstores and supermarkets but remember that removing a wart with salicylic acid requires a strict regimen of cleaning the area, applying the acid, and removing the dead skin with a pumice stone or emery board.
