A wart is generally a small, rough tumor, typically on hands and feet, that can resemble a cauliflower or a solid blister; they can grow on all parts of your body including on your skin, on the inside of your mouth, on your genitals and on your rectal area. The common wart which is more than likely those found on someone’s fingers or hands are still contagious if they are touched but it is not uncommon for someone to contract warts from using the towel of someone who has the condition.

The most contagious of all warts are genital warts which are caught from another person who has them during sex, even orally, who may not even know they have them but all warts except for those on the soles of the feet do not cause pain. A person will not generally become vulnerable to warts until after the age of three and after this they can grow almost anywhere and in women even inside the vagina which often aren’t detected until they have an examination.

Warts find it easier to take hold on cut or scratched skin and are often seen in batches on children who scratch at them and help to spread them but unless there is a specific reason to rid them, it isn’t always necessary. Many people have warts removed as they do not look pleasant or to stop them infecting other areas but even if the warts are removed there is no guarantee they will not return. Whilst it is quite normal to buy ointments for example over the counter, the doctor can actually freeze warts with liquid nitrogen but this remedy does require more than one treatment.

Whilst warts all tend to be referred to as common warts, this is not the case as there are a large number of variations. The 100 hundred different type of wart in the human papillomavirus group are quite focused in the areas they attack including those that are found in the genitalia.

Some people are more naturally resistant to the human papillomavirus viruses and don’t seem to get warts as easily as other people but for those who are more susceptible, even biting your nails can also cause warts to spread on your fingertips and around your nails. Common warts appear most often on the tops of the fingers and hands, usually along the cuticles, as rough, thick, cauliflower like papules that develop on their own or in large numbers and often contain one or more tiny black dots, that are actually small, clotted blood vessels.

Another type of wart is the flat wart that just rises above the surface of the skin and is ‘flat’; these tend to appear more on areas of the face, arms or legs and will sometimes be seen in very large groups. Often discovered in the urethra, vagina and anus, ano-genital warts are highly contagious; they have a preference for the damp areas and can also appear skin colored but not always plus they are not always the same shape.

It is not known why but often warts will vanish on their own but in some cases this can take years, others however, require a little help as they are persistent and show no signs of disappearing. The most common type of treatment involves salicylic acid which is readily available at drugstores and supermarkets but remember that removing a wart with salicylic acid requires a strict regimen of cleaning the area, applying the acid, and removing the dead skin with a pumice stone or emery board.
