Most people at some time or another will suffer with a small circular tumor on the surface of their skin commonly known as a wart and whilst it will probably be on either their hands or feet, they can be found on any part of the skins surface. Some people are unfortunate enough to catch their warts from someone else, even if is only because they used their towel.

Warts situated on the soles of the feet do cause discomfort but generally they are painless even warts on the genitalia which are caught from another person who has them and becomes a carrier through sex. Strangely, warts only seem to affect people after the age of three and women can actually have them inside the vagina and be completely unaware they are there.

There isn’t normally any reason to have warts removed as they don’t prove normally to be a problem but if they are the result of an incision then they can start spreading especially if picked at. Treatment of warts is generally carried out owing to the adverse cosmetic affect they have but it isn’t a bad idea if they become a persistent problem. A doctor can also freeze warts and verrucas away with liquid nitrogen but often several freezing treatments will be necessary before the warts are totally removed.

Common warts are a type of infection caused by viruses in the human papillomavirus family but there are many different types. The 100 hundred different type of wart in the human papillomavirus group are quite focused in the areas they attack including those that are found in the genitalia.

It is still unknown why some people are more susceptible to warts than others and some are so sensitive they can even get them from biting their finger nails which spread to the fingertips. This is the area the common wart is most frequently found, around the cuticles at the finger tips and recognized by the cauliflower like appearance of the tumor which sometimes grow in groups; the small black dots that are in the center are actually blood vessels.

Another type of wart is the flat wart that just rises above the surface of the skin and is ‘flat’; these tend to appear more on areas of the face, arms or legs and will sometimes be seen in very large groups. Warts that affect the genitals and anus vary in size and shape, some looking like large common warts to others that are small and shiny; they can even be found inside the urethra, vagina and anus.

Some warts may last many years and then just vanish whilst others will require intervention from a topical ointment or by the doctor. The most common topical treatment for warts and verrucas is salicylic acid an various forms, which is available in most drugstores and whilst it is effective, it does require strict adherence to the cleaning regime.
